No one will argue that one of the best parts of traveling is food, and the next best thing to traveling itself is seeing all the glorious food that you could eat in another country. So when Netflix, who knows me too well, suggested Street Food, a food documentary that focuses on the specialty street food of a city each episode, I knew I had to get on board.
Volume 1: Asia focuses on various types of both traditional and modern street food across cities from well-known metropolises like Bangkok and Osaka, to hidden foodie gems I'd never heard of like Chiayi, Taiwan, or Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Each episode is narrated by a bilingual English-speaking person from that city, as well as various interviews with the local street food vendors in their native language. There is always a central character in each episode, one vendor and their specialty food that the episode goes back to between introducing new foods in the same city.
My favorite part about the series was that it explored the way each vendor prepared and made their particular unique dish, and what it meant to that vendor's family or owner. It reminded me of how culturally and even relationally significant food can be, particularly in Asia. Of course, I loved seeing all the beautiful food recap shots of every dish. I've definitely made a checklist of all the street food I want to try in my next Asian adventure.
